Research: Alibaba and IBM are leading in the number of blockchain patents

China’s Internet giant Alibaba and IBM, the large US corporation, are leading in the number of issued patents related to the blockchain technology.

In a study, iPR Daily relied on patent databases of China, USA, Europe, Japan and South Korea, as well as the World Intellectual Property Organization.

According to the report, Alibaba ranks first in the rating – 90 registered patent applications are on the company’s account. The second position belongs to IBM with 89 applications, the third place is occupied by Mastercard with 80 patents, and the fourth – financial conglomerate of Bank of America with 53 projects.

Closes the five active players in the field of blockchain patents of the People’s Bank of China (PBoC). In 44 patent applications, the financial regulator describes the solutions for the emitted PBoC digital currency. It is noteworthy that the laboratory of digital currencies of the Chinese Central Bank has issued 40 patents within 12 months.


The list of iPR Daily also includes companies: Tencent, Accenture, Ping An Insurance, Bitmain, Intel, Visa, Sony, Google. Each organization has at least 20 registered patent applications on its account.
