If you needed proof that cryptocurrency has gone from the fringes of American society to the mainstream, look no further than the soon to be released Hollywood blockbuster which explores the often misunderstood concept of digital money.
The movie which is aptly titled ‘Crypto’ features Hollywood legend Kurt Russell alongside a star-studded cast that includes Beau Knapp (The Nice Guys) and Alexis Bledel (The Handmaid’s Tale).
Set in upstate New York, Crypto is a crime thriller about a potato farmer (Kurt Russell) struggling to maintain the family estate while his son (Knapp) a money laundering agent is tasked with investigating a tangled web of corruption and fraud involving cryptocurrency.
The film however does not focus on a specific currency. Even more, it does not entirely focus on cryptocurrencies, thus leading some to speculate that it may be a little less than satisfying for diehard crypto enthusiasts.
The movie’s producers, Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman told Inverse that neither of them are real-life cryptocurrency experts.
“Both of us have dabbled,” says Yale Levine. “I don’t know if either of us would consider ourselves expert. It was really our writers who fleshed out the topic and dove into the research. They were the ones who really became experts to make sure the film was authentic.”
Despite their limited knowledge of crypto, the producers are upbeat about its long term viability.
“We hope it lasts for a long time,” says Yale Levine. “That’s one of the reasons why we wanted to do the film. We’re not into fads. We hope it stays around for a long time.”
Crypto which has gone into post production, is scheduled for release later in 2019.
